The marathon interviews started on the set of Good Morning Nigeria (GMN), COOL TV’s female-powered breakfast show, where the topic was the relevance of the National Peace Committee (NPC); in the backdrop of its members’ reported visit to PMB and their alleged intervention or nonintervention on the supposed theft of public fund by some members of the immediate past administration.

My reactions are as follow: One, insomuch as no serious minded Nigerian could wish away the importance of the role played by the NPC to lubricate the unprecedented smooth transition of power from one party to the other, the committee would be seen to be intrusive and overbearing if it’s seen to be intervening in matters such as the sensitive matter in question here. Albeit I think there can still be roles, such as getting the Boko Haramists to put down their arms and stop killing fellow Nigerians, the said intervention in the machinery of governance especially as it relates to course of justice is totally unnecessary.

Two, I stated that I hoped that PMB wouldn’t squander his electoral goodwill by not letting the criminal justice institutions speedily perform their jobs (therefore quickly securing the conviction, sentencing and/or retrieval of the accused persons) if truly the evidences against them are as much they’re made to be. I opined that if, say in one-and-a-half-year’s time, no conviction of a major personage in the past administration has been secured through the courts, people will soon be disillusioned with PMB’s anti-corruption campaign.

I concluded by praising PMB for setting up the Prof Itsay Osagie’s anti-corruption committee and I pray the committee would help suggest the necessary reforms urgently needed in criminal justice infrastructure to be able to convict the likes of Ibori who walked free on 173 charged in this jurisdiction relative to the 4 he pled guilty to in UK.
